We hear this year in and year out. Quite frankly I am really tired of hearing about it.

buddists never slaughtered anyone? you are so naive and uneducated it would be funny if it weren't such a tragedy. keep on hating people, in the name of nonreligion. The vast majority of the world is not even human, just brain dead idiots according to you...as if atheists haven't slaughtered even more people.........
You are hateful, ignorant, and intolerant...

All the insults and hatred you spew at the humanity of the world could be better spent on yourself.

So when someone disagrees with your religious views they are not just wrong, but full of hatred? This kind of mentality is the reason that religion has caused so much violence. People can't even handle being told their dogma is wrong, let alone practice what their religion actually teaches.

riverqueen, you'd better re-read URQ196's comments. He didn't say Buddhists never slaughtered anyone. He said "Buddhusts never slaughtered anyone like the CHRISTIANS". If YOU are a professing Christian, I'd advise you to do four things: 1. Thoroughly study the history of the Christian church and the atrocities it has carried out in the name of Christ. 2. Thoroughly study the teachings of Christ (You do remember him, don't you?) and explain how they could possibly justify #1. 3. Examine yourself and how your own vitriolic attitude aligns with the word of Christ. 4. Memorize: Matthew 7:21-23 and John 18:36. Then get down on your knees and beg the Lord to forgive you "as we forgive others".

Stampede deaths along with ferry boat capsizes are endemic in developing countries. It seems that every few weeks one or the other has occurred. The basic problem in each is overcrowding and it appears that the governments involved are either incapable or unwilling to clamp down and engage in effective crowd control.

One does have to wonder though at the deaths occurring at religious gatherings. Do the survivors critically question what kind of a god they believe in when this occurs, or do they believe that their survival was because of the fervency of their belief?

This is a very sad event and for the matter of fact any occasion where there is loss of human lives is very sad. I am surprised by the scripted language used by the author of the article over here, there should be proper investigation and fact finding before any kind of reporting done. For World Peace sake please stop dramatizing deaths and work for peace, love for once.

I just don't understand why the American media needs to print these kind of news. It's not like anybody cares over here. So 168 people in india, who have nothing else in their deprived lives except the promise of some otherworldly deity promising to end their misery in the afterlife, got crushed in a stampede caused by the apathy and mismanagement of the goverment. So 162 people out a fricking 1 billion or so are dead leaving behind orphan children and grieving loved ones ....But as Mark and Wendy pointed out ...there are lot many where they come from and ...that's 162 off the road....

How did you end up being so bitter and unfeeling Mark and Wendy , growing up in this country of plenty ?

How is it that every year there is a religious event in India where people are killed by stampeding? One person gets crushed in a football game in Italy and they redesign the whole stadium. How about a little freaking crowd control at these things to save some lives!??!!? Incredible.

People have some respect for humans. Just remember when a friend or family member in your family dies, you would like the situation to be treated with respect. Didn't your mother ever teach you if you do not have anything nice to say, do not say anything? A little child crying, stroking her mother's forehead, I think that is pretty tragic. Imagine if it was your child crying over your dead body, and then to have heartless people say their lives don't matter. This is what is wrong with the world. We need to start treating others with respect, and tolerance. You do not have to agree with anyone beliefs or practices, but just keep in mind not everyone is going to agree with you.

Thoughtful post. Religion is pathetic, but so are most people. And for many people, that's ALL (religion) they have. Joseph Stalin (no hero of mine) said something like: "The death of a million people is an event; the death of one person is a tragedy." An interesting perspective. One thing is for sure, the planet is already overpopulated with homo sapiens, perhaps the least endangered species on Earth.

I have an idea, if you see 100,000 people or so gathering... walk the other way. Religion is fine but you don't have to be stupid and follow the lemmings to your death. Church, temple, or whatever, is not so much a place as it is a conviction in your heart. Go ahead and visit these sacred sites but pick the off days, okay? Just my opinion, excuse me, I have a customer....

I do agree with Arthur Clarke though, Religion IS for the weak minded. The loss of life and the suffering of their families is indeed tragic and I really don't believe that Americans don't care...we've been educated enough to spot a problem and fix it...third world countries mainly don't see them even after being hit in the face with it time after time. that's why we're tired of hearing about it

Thank you Amit for your contribution. Authorities in India as well as China still have not fully grasped the purpose of thorough planning and proper regulations. Even in this country we have many with short memories, who if it was up to them would angrily roll back all regulations which often were instituted ONLY after heavy losses of life, year after year. I just read that New York City (Babylon, for our fundamentally challenged) 150 years ago had a horrific 'swill milk scandal', an unregulated practise that killed thousands over decades. It seems as though China is repeating that lesson.
Yes we hear stories year after year about stampede disasters in the developing world (dismiss them as 'stupid' stories, laugh them off as the devoutly rrreligious entering the rrrealm of rrrreincarnation). I'm NOT TIRED of them. They are a fresh reminder why we have fire exits, load limits, all those 'damn regulations' (for those who don't understand their purpose). The same goes for traffic deaths in cars, planes and trains... the changes in regulations brought down HORRIFIC numbers to a tiny fraction of what they were.

Footnote: apologies for the odd allegations in this threat, that some Christian God would dish out selective vengeance on good people who don't share 'Christian dogma'. I wonder if those quoting scriptures hover over victims of traffic accidents, and in their last moments spew God's punishment venom.
We might as well presume God had it out for American churches and schools when tornadoes blow them apart. (maybe paid the wrong preacher?) It would seem as though a just God would spare children and strike a Federal prison's death row first, a place full of hardcore murderers and child rapists, laughing at the system, eating themselves into obesity so they can't get in the chair... (just an unrelated thought)

Perhaps they can use the gasoline they are taking from hard working Americans and pour it over their heads. I'm sure the Chinese can export them some knock-off Bic lighters to expedite their demise. Their way of society may be in shambles, but that doesn't mean the people aren't good-hearted and loving individuals. I'm absolutely disgusted with some of these posts. Amit I feel bad for all those precious lives lost in the stampede, something needs to be done. Hollywoods Mom, your concern too is greatly appreciated. My heartfelt sympathies, NO ONE DESERVES TO DIE LIKE THIS, I WILL NOT WISH THIS ON MY ENEMIES EVEN.
I too am an American of Indian Origin-- Difference is I am a Roman Catholic. We are an extremely peace loving minority in a country dominated by over 85% Hindus and whilst Sectarian violence between Hindus and Muslims is commonplace, there is virtually no history of us clashing with either of the two.
Just a few weeks ago, Hindu extremists burned down churches, dragged Christians from their homes and many innocent women and Children were tortured and killed. I wonder why then, there was no outburst of sympathy for people of a faith that abhor violence of any kind whatsoever. The Pope and many European leaders pleaded with the government to clamp down on these people but little was done.
An education in a Catholic school in India is supposed to be of a higher standard and a prestige, all non Christians vie to get their children into Catholic schools but show no respect for lives of our people. Just some Years ago A Christian Missionary and his family were burnt alive by the fundamentalists in the state of Orrissa--
This is God's wrath, what goes around comes around--- as you sow so shall you reap.

thanks, Joe but I am not asking for any sympathy from Americans at all, all I am saying( rather stating a fact-- Do not mess with God ) just as the Hindus so callously massacared Christians and burned them alive just weeks ago, now its their turn ( what goes around comes around).

                                        Bryan,

The violence against christians in india is being perpetrated by the extreme right wing hindu fundamentalist parties like RSS and VHP. The thing you must know about these parties is that despite their claim they are not religious parties but political ones. The motive behind their violence is not religious antipathy but because they believe the quickest way to power is by inciting communal clashes between hindus and christians. That the large majority of hindus remain un-impressed by them does not make any difference to them because given the current law and order situation in India, any party, no matter how small or inconsequential, that can project muscle power is ruling the roost today.

These are the same parties that terrorize hindu couples celebrating valentine's day in in parks or restaurants while the 5 star hotel owned by the party head's daughetr in law celebrates valentine day with pomp and grandeur. Their propensity for violence does not diffrentiate between hindus or christians or muslims. The only reason they get away with it is because as you know there is no law and order in india for politicians.

The point i am trying to make is that these are opportunist criminals thugs masquerading as hindus who are doing all this. When you say hindus are burning christians you make it seem like all the 800 million hindus all over india are hell bent on burning indian christians alive. If that were the truth my dear Bryan, your tiny 2.5 percent population would have become toast by now.

The reality is that these are isolated events and as ghastly as they are , they are no more symptomatic of India and Hindus than the murder of James Byrd, Jr in Jasper was symptomatic of America and Whites.

So before you go crying on international forums just temper your perspective.

I say, sack all the churches and temples of all religions/sects/cults in all parts of the world including and especially here in the USA. And... make all forms of organised religion illegal! These institutions are breeding grounds for mental illness which usually manifests itself in fanaticism and intolerance of people of different faiths or especially, non-faith.

The members of these institutions reproduce with abandon(out of control human population growth), without any regard, respect or knowledge of the real world around them, and in doing so are destroying the global environment and eco-systems.
Religious indoctrination collides with scientific inquiry and maintains a barrier to the world community in getting a real education and being lifted out of misery and poverty.
An educated world rather than an indoctrinated world, would help us to become a self regulatory species of animal(control our own population explosion), and in doing so insure the survival of our planet for thousands of years to come.

The course we are on now is certainly one of self-destruction.

I just wonder why American Media will show the dead bodies (as they show on the MSN article) of people from less fortunate regions of the world...are these people any less valuable that those in our own country? I think it's disgusting, they shouldn't be showing them period, it just shows the capitalism on the suffering of other people to make an interesting news story. Shame on them!
